She was writing songs before she learned to write or read. Within 8 years she had her very first guitar. As a teenager, she began to sing on the local radio station in Knoxville, Tennessee. The first album she recorded was in the same calendar year Gold Band Records, a tiny independent label. When she was still in highschool she made her name locally however she longed for a bigger stage. Following her graduation in 1964 she relocated to Nashville. Dumb Blonde was her first single to reach the top of the charts on Monument Records. Porter Wagoner, a syndicated show on TV at the time was searching for a female singer in his show. Parton accepted the role in the year 1966. She joined RCA Records in 1968, and then the Grand Ole Opry was founded in 1969.
